10 Reasons to Skip Hawaii and Choose Fiji Instead

Two years of COVID travel restrictions bound us to our homes apart from two short, but careful, adventures by car. It was long past time for a real adventure. Snorkeling is a shared passion and my guy and I initially set our sights on Maui for the opportunity to go to Molokini Atoll.

I started researching accommodations only to run into remarkably high prices ($2300 minimum for six nights’ lodging). Clearly lots of travelers had Maui on their minds. Knowing that airlines often offer vacation bundles, we looked at Air Tahiti Nui and Fiji Airways because both island nations have direct flights from LAX.

Fiji Airways offered an economical package including flights, seven nights of resort accommodations (including two meals per day!), plus airport transfers for less than $1,800 per person. Sold!

Leaving from LAX, you travel to and from Fiji on a 10-hour overnight flight. Fiji Airways has a modern fleet of planes with individual power chargers and screens on the back of each seat. It also offers one of the nicest airline blankets I’ve ever experienced!

In no particular order, here are 10 reasons to skip Hawaii and travel to Fiji instead. (Full disclosure: I love Hawaii and lived there for a time. In fact, I was the first from my university to graduate with the home state of Hawaii, thanks to my father’s military duty station at the time.)

Happy people – Fijian people are happy, cheerful people eager to see that you have a good time while visiting their country. They speak English, but frequently speak their local language amongst each other.

Coral – Our guides took us to multiple reefs, each with their own characteristics like table corals, which we had not seen before. There was no evidence of coral bleaching and using coral-safe sunscreen is highly encouraged to keep the reefs healthy.

Sea life – The reefs were teeming with life with all ranges of color and form among the fish, brilliant cobalt blue sea stars, strange and interesting sea cucumbers, giant clams, octopus and even sharks (at a safe distance, thank you!)

Beaches – With 300 islands, a variety of beaches await you. The sea water was warmer than the pool water in early May. Although the beach at our resort had a lot of sandy churn from the incoming waves, the outer islands featured tranquil water with white, sandy beaches.

Resorts – Fiji offers everything from family-friendly resorts to honeymoon getaways or overwater bungalows. The country features more than 300 islands with residents on about 110 of them.

Music – The Fijian people seem to be gifted with amazing voices. Music is all around you and the local songs and dances will leave you smiling.

Excursions – The main airport is Nadi on the island of Viti Levu. Nearby Port Denerau is one of several launching points for inter-island or reef excursions. You can also island hop by water taxi or small planes.

Kava – Become an honorary Fijian by trying this local drink that has calming effects. It’s not a drug, but drinking kava mellows you out. I won’t lie, it tastes sort of like dirty mushroom water. But hey, you’re in Fiji…why not partake in the local tradition of a kava ceremony?

Relaxation – You won’t find bustling malls, casinos or rowdy nightclubs. A vacation in Fiji is a chance to unplug, relax and enjoy. If you want to explore the outer islands, go sailing or both, it is easy to arrange!

Sunsets – Every night was a chance to experience a stunning overwater sunset. Each postcard-worthy snapshot featured ever changing colors reflected on the glistening water, framed by palm trees.

If you are a beer or cocktail person, I’d offer an eleventh entry – the local Fiji Gold beer is quite good as are the locally-inspired cocktails.

So, what are you waiting for? Fiji is welcoming and the local people are eager to make sure you have a good visit.

Boston, MA  02110

16.)  Senior Content Creator, Conservation Law Foundation (CLF), Montpelier, VT; Concord, NH; Portland, ME; Providence, RI; New Haven, CT; or Boston, MA

Conservation Law Foundation is hiring a full-time Senior Content Creator. Reporting to the Chief Content Officer, this position will develop and execute multi-channel content strategies to advance CLF’s advocacy and fundraising goals. It is an opportunity to join a highly experienced team of communications/marketing professionals and dedicated advocates working on critical environmental issues facing New England.

This position can be based in any one of CLF’s regional offices (Montpelier, VT; Concord, NH; Portland, ME; Providence, RI; New Haven, CT; or Boston, MA), with some opportunity to work remotely.

What you’ll do

Key responsibilities of the Senior Content Creator include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with the Chief Content Officer to develop and deliver an effective content strategy that supports CLF’s advocacy priorities.
  • Conceptualizing, writing, and editing blogs, feature stories, action alerts, and other content to produce clear, compelling narratives highlighting CLF’s legal, policy, and economic work.
  • Working with CLF Development Team to write fundraising materials, including quarterly appeal letters.
  • Overseeing the editorial strategy for CLF’s quarterly print newsletter, Conservation Matters, including writing, editing, and contracting of stories.
  • Supervising external writers and content creators.
  • Mentoring Communications Associates/Strategists in writing and editing, including effective narrative-based content.

What you’ll need:

  • 7+ years of experience as a writer/editor
  • Training in how to tell a story using words, images, and/or audio, and an understanding of how to create content that draws an audience.
  • Ability to turn complex issues into compelling, accessible, values-based narratives for lay audiences.
  • Experience writing effective and successful fundraising materials.
  • Proven editorial skills, including training and working with subject matter experts to create effective, accessible blogs.
  • Experience working with graphic designers and video producers.
  • Project management skills to manage editorial schedules and deadlines.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

About CLF

Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) protects New England’s environment for the benefit of all people. A nonprofit, member-supported organization, CLF uses the law, science, and the market to solve the region’s most challenging environmental problems from climate change to ocean conservation to transportation. Every day, CLF advocates stand up for New Englanders – in state houses, court houses and board rooms, regulatory hearings and community gatherings – to forge innovative paths to environmental progress and economic prosperity for all in our region. To that end, CLF frequently works with communities of color, and those that are economically or otherwise disadvantaged, which often suffer disproportionately from the impacts of environmental degradation.

CLF is committed to representing New England’s diversity in our staff, volunteers, boards, and membership and creating a positive, inclusive workplace culture where all can thrive. People of color are encouraged to apply.

Salary & Benefits

CLF offers a competitive salary, an extensive benefits plan, and an open and accepting work environment where differences are highly respected. The base salary for the position is $80,000; actual salary will reflect experience and qualifications.

We recognize the value of work-life balance and also strive to create opportunities for growth for all employees through professional development.

To Apply

CLF considers the health and safety of its staff members and their families, our guests, our visitors, and the community at large to be a top priority. All offers to work, intern, or volunteer with CLF are conditioned on the candidate complying with CLF’s mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy.

***  Where am I?

I arrived in Chania, Crete, on June and left on June 10.

“Chania is a city on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Crete. It’s known for its 14th-century Venetian harbor, narrow streets and waterfront restaurants. At the harbor entrance is a 16th-century lighthouse with Venetian, Egyptian and Ottoman influences. Opposite, the Nautical Museum has model ships, naval objects and photographs. The former monastery of St. Francis houses the Archaeological Museum of Chania.” ― Google

I am currently in Bahrain.

***  50 Places Across North America Where You Can Find Pantone’s 2022 Color of the Year

By Molly O’Brien

This year’s hue is born in the purple.

The Pantone Color of the Year 2022 is named “Very Peri”—it’s a periwinkle blue hue with violet-red undertones, meant to inspire a sense of positive emotion and symbolize the dynamic transformations that have taken place this past year while looking toward an optimistic future, ahead. This color can be seen in fields of blooming flowers, shades of purple mountain’s majesties across the Midwest, painted historic adobe buildings in the desert, and the brightly lit casino facades of more urban-centered outposts. Here’s where to spy this picturesque pigment in destinations across America.
